Laboratory detection of extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs)--the need for a reliable, reproducible method.

Abstract

A reason for the under-recognition of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-mediated resistance has been the lack of a convenient and sensitive method for recognising ESBL-producing strains. This paper reviews the relative merits and demerits of various methods used.
