Psychological costs of schizophrenia to the family.

A B Hatfield.

Abstract

Although many professionals have explored the effect of chronic physical illness on families, less attention has been paid to what happens to a family when one of its members is mentally ill. The study described here found that the families of schizophrenics contend with formidable emotional burdens and recommended that social supports and services be created to help minimize their distress.
