Abstract
teashirt was initially identified as a gene required for the specification of the trunk segments in Drosophila embryogenesis and encodes a transcription factor with zinc finger motifs. We report here that targeted expression of teashirt in imaginal discs is sufficient to induce ectopic eye formation in non-eye tissues, a phenotype similar to that produced from targeted expression of eyeless, dachshund, and eyes absent. Furthermore, teashirt and eyeless induce the expression of each other, suggesting that teashirt is part of the gene network that functions to specify eye identity.Entities:
