Restraints and the elderly with mental illness: ethical issues and moral reasoning.

V H Dawkins1.

Abstract

The use of restraints to enable the care provided to the elderly has long been a source of contention and fodder for argument among health care professionals. The question of whether to use mechanical restraints to prevent falls in the elderly is an ongoing debate. An ethical framework is presented to assist the decision-making process.
