Abstract
It is exactly half a century ago that 5-hydroxytryptamine was discovered and over four decades ago two types of 5-HT receptors were described. In this article, Pramod Saxena, Peter De Vries and Carlos Villalón trace the development of the modern classification and nomenclature of 5-HT receptors, which now include more than a dozen subtypes. In doing so, they advocate that the so-called '5-HT1-like' receptors, having been shown to be a heterogeneous population of 5-HT1B, 5-HT1D and 5-HT7 receptors, are now redundant.Entities:
