The transformation of academic health in the United States.

Abstract

Like all health care institutions, the nation's academic health centers are facing the need for fundamental change in structure and opportunity. This article examines the trends in five major areas: research, higher education, specialization, finance, and organization. The impact of these trends on the academic health centers is explored.
