Abstract
Disease resistance in plants is often characterized by matching resistance and avirulence genes in host and pathogen, respectively. It has recently been shown that expression of bacterial avirulence genes in plants induces resistance gene-dependent defense reactions. The finding that avirulence proteins act inside plant cells represents a major advance in our understanding of host-pathogen specificity.Mesh:
