Abstract
Although we still do not have an optimum method of treatment for osteonecrosis of the femoral head, significant advances have been made during the past decade. A number of newer techniques for prophylactic management have been developed. Whichever technique is selected, for the best results the condition must be diagnosed early and treatment instituted promptly. Thus, it is essential that the reader be familiar with those modalities available for the early diagnosis of osteonecrosis. Once the diagnosis has been made, an effective method of evaluation and staging must be used to help determine the most appropriate treatment. In addition, the uniform use of a quantitative staging system will allow investigators to speak a common language, will help dispel much of the confusion and contradiction that currently exists in this field and will allow us to compare the effectiveness of various methods of treatment. Ultimately, this will improve our ability to treat patients with osteonecrosis.Entities:
