Does adenotonsillectomy affect the course of bronchial asthma and nasal allergy?

H Saito1, K Asakura, M Hata, A Kataura, K Morimoto.

Abstract

Twenty-five bronchial asthma patients who underwent adenotonsillectomy were studied for postoperative changes of respiratory symptoms, doses or frequency of medications, and required hospitalization. Postoperative evaluation proved that 22 patients (88%) improved their asthmatic symptoms, 15 patients (60%) were able to eliminate all of their medications, and 7 patients (28%) were able to eliminate some of their medication. There were no patients with aggravated conditions. Out of 17 patients with nasal allergy, only 3 patients (18%) improved their nasal symptoms. The results suggest that adenotonsillectomy might change some conditions of allergic states in children.
