Abstract
During a 25-week period (June to November 1995), stool specimens with an abnormal appearance (semiliquid to liquid, containing gross mucus or blood) were selected for testing with a new EIA method for detection of Shiga-like toxin-producing Escherichia coli (O157:H7 and non-O157 serotypes). The 270 specimens tested originated from different patients. Eleven of the 270 were positive by EIA for Shiga-like toxin (SLT). Escherichia coli O157:H7 was recovered from six of the EIA-positive specimens, and the remaining five positive samples produced non-O157 isolates.Entities:
