Educational pathways out of poverty: responding to the realities of women's lives.

E Kates1.

Abstract

The ways in which women receiving Aid to Families with Dependent Children were able to achieve a postsecondary education are examined, as are the effects of the Job Opportunities and Basic Skills program introduced in 1988. The lessons learned from the amalgamation of educational and public welfare programs are discussed, along with the particular advantages of such an education for women living in poverty.
