Firefighters: fitness for duty.

Abstract

One of the functions of the fire department physician is to give candidates and firefighters clearance to work based on medical and physical performance criteria. In this chapter the author discusses the practical application of the medical standards of NFPA 1582 and physical standards as measured by agility tests and the proposed NFPA 1583, presenting guidelines for hiring, return to work, and administration of periodic exams.
