Defining sphincter of oddi dysfunction.

P Funch-Jensen1.

Abstract

Sphincter of Oddi (SO) dysmotility may give rise to pain. The golden standard for the demonstration of SO dysfunction is endoscopic manometry. A number of abnormalities are observed in patients with postcholecystectomy pain and in patients with idiopathic recurrent pancreatitis. Criteria for defining SO dysfunction and the possible mechanisms for the precipitation of pain are discussed.
