Abstract
Poxviruses encode soluble interferon-gamma receptors (IFN-gamma Rs) that inhibit IFN-gamma activity and play a major role in virus pathogenesis. In contrast to the highly species specific cellular homologues, the vaccinia IFN-gamma R has novel broad species specificity. This has implications for the unknown origin and natural host(s) of vaccinia virus, the vaccine used for smallpox eradication.Entities:
