Abstract
Decortication for empyema is a well-established procedure and is based on sound surgical principles. When applied in properly selected patients, rapid recovery with a good functional result is to be expected. Best results are obtained when the optimal time for surgical intervention is chosen, usually relatively early in the course of the process for which it is employed. Although modern supportive care and antibiotic therapy are important, a properly performed operation, employed at the proper time, is a major determinant of a successful outcome.Entities:
