Abstract
Research on exercise in the treatment of childhood obesity is reviewed. The role of activity or sedentary behaviors in the development of obesity is discussed, with a conceptual model for understanding choice of being sedentary or active presented. Research that assesses the effects of exercise alone and diet plus exercise on child weight control are reviewed, as well as new research on modifying access to sedentary behaviors. Treatment research suggests exercise alone is not sufficient, with the combination of diet plus exercise more effective for long-term than short-term changes. Finally, suggestions for new research are presented.Entities:
