Abstract
In any operative procedure, careful surgical dissection with precise hemostasis is one of the most effective ways to minimize surgical blood loss and reduce the need for allogeneic red blood cell transfusion. Several other techniques contribute to reduce blood loss in major orthopedic procedures. These techniques are reviewed and include rehearsal of the procedure and positioning the patient to reduce venous engorgement. In addition, a case report is presented that demonstrates the feasibility of revision hip replacement surgery without the use of transfusion in a Jehovah's Witness patient.Entities:
