Zinc metabolism and surgical trauma.

T Hallböök, H Hedelin.

Abstract

Several investigations have shown that zinc deficiency impairs wound healing in surgical wounds and in chronic ulcers. It is also well established that surgical trauma produces a sharp decrease in serum zinc concentration. It has not been clearly shown that this decrease is due to a rise in urinary excretion. In the present investigation the relationship between urinary zinc excretion and the fall in serum zinc postoperatively was studied in 38 patients. Older patients usually had low preoperative serum zinc concentrations. Preoperative zinc substitution is therefore suggested for such patients.
