This review presents an outline of the new and expanding role of otolaryngologists in the management of swallowing disorders. It emphasizes an holistic approach to swallowing management. Better understanding of swallowing analysis and the unglamorous yet essential role of conservative management will lead to improvements in surgical treatment and overall patient care.
