Abstract
Glucocorticoids are immunosuppressive and antiinflammatory agents that act through multiple mechanisms. This review highlights recent evidence that lipocortin-1, a member of the annexin family of calcium-binding proteins, can be induced by glucocorticoids, and may mediate some of the effects of glucocorticoids through putative lipocortin-1 receptors, which have been found on the surface of phagocytic cells. Recent advances in annexin biology have been drawn together to formulate a novel hypothesis for the regulation of inflammation.Entities:
