[Dorsal wrist ganglion. Cause of dorsal wrist pain].

R A Berghoff1, P C Amadio.

Abstract

Ganglion cysts are the most common soft tissue tumors of the hand. They are more common in women than in men. Although most ganglions can be diagnosed easily on physical examination, ultrasound may be helpful in diagnosing very small (occult) ganglions. Dorsal ganglions typically arise from the dorsal scapholunate intraosseous ligament. Approximately 30 percent of dorsal ganglions resolve spontaneously. For symptomatic ganglia which persist, surgical excision is the most effective treatment. Aspiration and steroid injection appear to be only slightly more effective than no treatment. Recurrence after surgery occurs in roughly 15 percent of cases.
