Embolization of the hypogastric arteries in the control of massive vaginal hemorrhage.

D C Smith, J F Wyatt.

Abstract

Percutaneous, transcatheter Gelfoam embolization of the hypogastric arteries was utilized in a patient to control vaginal hemorrhage secondary to far-advanced carcinoma of the cervix. The advantages of this method are outlined, and consideration of its use is recommended for patients in similar situations. The various types of particulate material used in transcatheter embolization and the situations in which they have been used are reviewed.
