The use of the index of orthodontic treatment need (IOTN) as a public health tool: a pilot study.

H Lunn1, S Richmond, C Mitropoulos.

Abstract

Many attempts have been made in the past to develop indices of malocclusion. The index of orthodontic treatment need was developed in the United Kingdom to assess both dental health and aesthetics, primarily for clinical purposes. This study was designed to assess the use of the index of orthodontic treatment need in dental public health. Dentists in the community dental service were taught how to use the index from a hierarchical training and calibration programme. These dentists then tested the index in the field and reported back their findings. The results indicate that the index of orthodontic treatment need has potential in dental public health but some modifications are suggested. These suggestions will be incorporated into a full study alongside caries prevalence in the future.
