New concepts of vascular headache.

R Macfarlane1.

Abstract

The 'vascular' aetiology of headache is questioned. An alternative hypothesis based on sensitisation of sensory nerve endings by neurogenic plasma extravasation is discussed. The development of drugs which selectively inhibit the release of vasoactive neuropeptides from perivascular sensory nerves may benefit patients with head pain from a variety of causes.
