The use of the inspiratory pause 'hold' in increasing oxygenation in postsurgical patients.

J S Tate1, C H Ho.

Abstract

Seventeen ventilator patients were studied using the half-second inspiratory "hold." Each patient served as his or her own control. In each case, the half-second inspiratory hold increased mechanical ventilatory efficiency, as measured by the arterial PO2 and PCO2. No adverse consequences were noted.
