Abstract
The unsaturated fatty acid auxotroph Escherichia coli AK7 supplied with linolenic acid, while appearing normal during logarithmic growth, showed a fast decline in CFU during starvation as a result of an osmotic downshift when transferred to standard agar plates unsupplemented with an osmolyte such as 300 mosM sucrose or salt (NaCl or KCl). The starved cells could recover their osmoresistance when an energy source was added to the starvation medium.Entities:
