Road accident trends in Nigeria.

A J Oluwasanmi1.

Abstract

A study of road accident trends in Nigeria between the period 1960 and 1989 revealed a sharp increase in fatal accident occurrence. Between 1960 and 1969, it was observed that over 18,000 deaths occurred as a result of road accidents. By the third decade (1980-1989), this figure had increased to about five times, i.e. more than 92,000 deaths. Reasons for the severity of road accidents in Nigeria are discussed.
