Abstract
Most follow-up studies of surgery for temporomandibular joint (TMJ) internal derangement are retrospective and do not specify inclusion and exclusion criteria, methods for assessment, definitions of outcome criteria, etc. This paper reviews the literature on treatment evaluation and methods for assessment. Recommendations with special reference to TMJ surgery are given. The use of randomized clinical trials is emphasized.Mesh：
