Abstract
Lipoproteins are macromolecular complexes that transport cholesterol and triglycerides through the blood stream. The assembly and secretion of lipoproteins occurs in the liver and small intestine, but many modifications and transformations occur in the plasma. Plasma levels of cholesterol and triglycerides are regulated by both environmental effects on lipid metabolism and by genetic factors affecting both apoproteins on the surface of the lipoproteins and enzymes in plasma. Abnormalities of the lipoprotein transport system can increase an individual's risk for developing atherosclerosis.Entities:
