Abstract
The status of our structure/function studies is at a crossroad. Further studies are needed to understand events on a molecular level, particularly how saliva is made and processed. Animal models as well as tissue and cell culture systems are being developed to address these issues. Nevertheless, enough information is now available to begin enhancing the natural defense properties of salivary secretions through clinical modalities such as the development of (1) diagnostic reagents and tests for local and systemic disease, (2) artificial salivas for the treatment of salivary dysfunction, and (3) topical vaccines to combat against oral diseases.Entities:
