Intermittent obstruction of an ileostomy caused by a PEG tube bumper.

R Highhouse1, W S Roberts, G Towsley, J Mamel.

Abstract

PEG tubes are used for decompression of the stomach or enteral feeding and are secured with bumpers. These bumpers may migrate. A patient with a stenotic ileostomy stoma is presented in whom migration of a PEG tube bumper resulted in an intermittent small bowel obstruction. Revision of the ileostomy stoma with removal of the bumper resolved the problem. Bumper migration should be considered a possible etiology for bowel obstruction in patients with PEG tubes especially if they have a stenotic stoma.
