[What kinds of species are in the conjunctiva?].

U Schumacher1.

Abstract

With suitable culture methods less than 5% of conjunctival fluid specimens remain negative. From approximately 95% of the swab cultures at least 65 bacterial species - although in low numbers - were recovered. Among the predominant organisms were gram-positive species like several coagulase-negative Staphylococcus spp., Propionibacterium spp., Corynebacterium spp. and members of the genera Peptostreptococcus, Streptococcus and Actinomyces. Among the frequently isolated gram-negative species were members of the genera Neisseria and Haemophilus as well as Enterobacteriaceae like Proteus spp.
