Abstract
In the years 1987-1992, 1075 men and 1247 women with senile and presenile cataract were operated at the Department of Ophthalmology in Bydgoszcz. Age of patients ranged from 40 to 98 years. Mean age of men was 63 years and throughout the study period some tendency to its decrease was observed. Mean age of women was 65 years and its decrease was statistically significant, as well as the differences between the mean age of men and women. In diabetics cataract did not occur more often or in younger age. Myopia was found in 4.5% of men and in 9.2% of women. Mean age of patients (59 men, 63 women) with cataract and myopia was statistically significantly lower in comparison with the mean age of the whole group of men or women. The performed studies indicate that mean age of patients with senile and presenile cataract is getting lower. Men are affected in younger age than women. Myopia increased the probability of cataract development on earlier age.Entities:
