Long-term results of colposuspension operation for genuine stress incontinence.

A T Abu-Heija1.

Abstract

A series of 88 patients were treated by a technique of modified Burch technique (colposuspension), in which the vaginal vault on each side is sutured to the iliopectineal ligament on the ipsilateral side using a pair of Dexon 1 sutures on each side. Those patients reviewed 4 years later after the operation, 88% of them were continent. There were 10 failures. The main factors associated with recurrence were previous vaginal repair (70%), pregnancy and vaginal birth after surgery (30%). This confirm that colposuspension is an effective operation for treatment of genuine stress incontinence, the success rate is high, but the selection of patients is essential, also it is important to have Cystometrogram done before surgery to avoid surgery for those patients who will not benefit from it, like those patients with detrusor muscle instability.
