When the waiting is difficult: surgical waiting room volunteers aid families.

J Morey-Pedersen.

Abstract

The Surgical Waiting Room is a comfortable room for families waiting for loved ones in surgery. It is adjacent to the OR Suite and provides easy access to hospital services. A program was designed to meet the needs of waiting families, surgeons, and OR-PACU staff. A select group of trained volunteers assist family members while their loved ones are in surgery and during the immediate postoperative phase. Volunteers' responsibilities include communicating with families, surgeons, and staff; providing nonmedical information; and providing support for waiting families. A comfortable and caring environment fosters a positive image of the administration's philosophy and of the institution.
