The retinal blood flow in diabetes.

E M Kohner1.

Abstract

The retinal blood flow is significantly increased in diabetic patients with mild or pre-proliferative retinopathy. This is sufficient to damage the endothelial cells. Hyperglycaemia increases blood flow and interferes with autoregulation. High blood pressure interferes also with autoregulation. Both control of blood glucose and blood pressure must be strict in order to prevent the full development of diabetic retinopathy.
