Abstract
The integrase encoded by the integron of the transposon Tn21 can mediate the site-specific fusion of two plasmids if there is a recombination hot spot (59 bp element) in one of them and the sequence GWTMW in the other. The use of this latter, loosely defined site explains how antibiotic-resistance genes could first become associated with integrons.Entities:
