The epistemology of expectant parenthood.

M Sandelowski1, B P Black.

Abstract

A secondary analysis of information obtained from 288 interviews, conducted with 62 childbearing couples in the course of a qualitative and longitudinal study, suggests that much of the work of expectant parenthood is oriented toward getting to know the fetus. This article emphasizes the epistemological (as opposed to the emotional) relationship between parent and fetus.
