Management of coin ingestion: any change?

P J Schweich1.

Abstract

Figure 1 summarizes the recommendations for treatment of coin ingestion. Serious complications from coin ingestion are extremely rare and are usually found in children who unknowingly ingest a coin. The recommendations from the literature concerning the treatment of children with a history of coin ingestion, such as obtaining radiographs on all such children, may not accurately reflect the current practices of emergency physicians. It would be of interest to survey emergency physicians to examine actual practices in the management of coin ingestion.
