Adolescent substance abuse. Risk factors and protective factors.

L H Patton1.

Abstract

The incidence of substance use and abuse by adolescents is influenced by multiple risk and protective factors, including genetic influences, predisposition, family and peer influences, individual personality traits, and societal influences. The potential opportunities for the pediatrician to alter evolving risk factors and to foster protective influences are discussed.
