Abstract
Cardiac trauma requiring immediate surgical intervention is usually thought of as a rare event. However, our recent experience at Leicester Royal Infirmary suggests that this clinical situation is on the increase, and has highlighted potential problems in the management of these patients. It is essential that all units that may have to deal with these patients have the necessary facilities and equipment to perform an emergency thoracotomy in the Accident and Emergency department, and that the medical and nursing staff involved have been properly trained to deal with these life-threatening emergencies.Entities:
