Assessment of hypochondriasis.

H M Warwick1.

Abstract

This article gives a detailed description of the assessment of hypochondriasis. Other conditions are described in which this type of assessment can be useful. The aims of assessment are outlined, followed by a full description of the information that should be obtained, and methods of assessment used. Information gained at assessment is used to construct a cognitive-behavioural formulation of the problem, emphasising aetiological and maintaining factors, which then can be modified during treatment. Other important aspects of assessment include overcoming problems in the therapeutic relationship, and helping the patient to accept psychological treatment. Other practical difficulties in assessment are described, and some solutions are offered.
