The pathophysiology of Guillain-Barré syndrome.

E Waldock.

Abstract

Landry-Guillain-Barré-Strohl syndrome is a demyelinating disorder affecting the peripheral nervous system. It is also known as post-infectious polyneuropathy or acute idiopathic polyneuritis (Prydun, 1983). Within days, the disorder can replace an individual's busy and active lifestyle by one of total dependence, sometimes lasting months. Despite modern intensive medical care, the mortality rate is still high at 5% (Rajah, 1992).
