Cytokines in Sjögren's syndrome.

F N Skopouli1, H M Moutsopoulos.

Abstract

This review discusses the respective role in Sjögren's syndrome of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as interleukin (IL)-1 beta and tumour-necrosis factor-alpha, and anti-inflammatory cytokines, such as transforming growth factor-beta, interferon-alpha and IL-10. The former products are secreted by lymphocytes as well as epithelial cells. Th 1 cell cytokines predominate within the focal infiltrates. Increased levels of circulating IL2 receptors correlate to the progression of the ongoing disease.
