Abstract
The selectins are three related receptors that initiate rolling of leukocytes on activated platelets or endothelium through Ca(2+)-dependent recognition of cell surface carbohydrates. Cell adhesion may be enhanced by a limited number of membrane glycoproteins that present high affinity carbohydrate ligands to specific selectins. The synthesis and surface display of the selectins is normally tightly controlled, but inappropriate expression may contribute to inflammatory disorders. Recent in vivo studies confirm the importance of the selectins in both physiological and pathological leukocyte recruitment.Entities:
