Quantitative structural differences within the normal term hum;an placenta: a pilot study.

P A Boyd, R A Brown, W J Stewart.

Abstract

The macroscopic and microscopic structure of four normal term placentae was studied quantitatively using a point counting technique. Different horizontal and vertical zones of the placentae were measured in order to establish a method for sampling placetae which takes into account zonal morphological differences. It was concluded that in order to get a representative estimate of placental microscopic components, if 10 blocks are to be cut, two of them should be from the outer 2 cm zone.
