The medial malleolus in ankle fractures.

J Hughes.

Abstract

The theme for the 1980's in fractures about the ankle joint, particularly those of type B and C, should be to restore both side of the ankle joint in an anatomic manner. The lateral malleolus should be fixed by an appropriate fixation device after adequate reduction has been carried out. The medial joint likewise should be inspected and the fractures reduced and fixed. This allows minimal immobilization postoperatively, and very rapidly the normal dynamics of the foot and ankle are restored and the threat of any component of fracture disease is markedly diminished.
