[Physiologic mechanisms of spatial hearing].

V I Shcherbakov, Iu I Kosiuga.

Abstract

The ability to localize the sources of clicks and tone-bursts of various frequency, duration and insensity coinciding with location of feeding troughs, was studied in 15 cats with motor alimentary conditioning technique during unilateral cold elimination or after unilateral ablation of the central (fields AI, AII, Ep, IT) and peripheral parts of the auditory system. Such animals projected the sound only to the side opposite to the intact hemisphere, on the continuation of the interaural axis. It is suggested that in the course of evolution, animals developed several mechanisms of localization, each of which preserves its function and is involved as a sub-system in the binaural bihemispheric mechanism.
