[Problems of anaesthesia in old age (author's transl)].

H F Poppelbaum.

Abstract

In old age elective surgical procedures may be planned and the patient may be prepared for surgery. Emergency procedures however have a much higher risk. Beyond the 7th decade the mortality rate shows a steep rise and in the 9th decade mortality amounts to about 50%. In cases of intestinal obstruction and peritonitis with preoperative shock the mortality rate even reaches the 90% mark. The duration of surgery is of decisive importance and it should be as short as possible. Having an experienced anaesthetist at the disposal the anaesthetic procedure is of secondary importance only.
