[Peritoneal drainage without antibiotics (author's transl)].

W Stremmel.

Abstract

The mortality of generalized peritonitis in serious. The drainage of the peritoneal cavity for diffuse peritonitis is essential but difficult, and it should be combined with peritoneal lavage. The drainage system must be properly adapted to the intraperitoneal liquid circulation. The local use of antibiotics is not indicated. Systemic administration is obvious, because in about 80% of cases, it is an anaerobic infection with Bacteroides fragilis, a dreadfully tough organism, which impairs the function of organs such as lung, heart, kidney, brain, and liver.
